Thanksgiving quotes

“If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “Thank you,” that would suffice.” – Meister Eckhart

Good afternoon LISD,

An award-winning hip-hop educational experience made its stop in Laredo this week. FMA Live! Forces in Motion was staged for LISD’s middle school students on Monday and Tuesday at the Civic Center Auditorium. Sponsored by Honeywell and NASA, the one-of-a-kind show incorporated hip-hop music and dancers, student volunteers, and on-stage interactive science experiments to demonstrate how physics is part of everyday life. Laredo was one of two cities in Texas where FMA Live made a stop. I would like to thank Honeywell and NASA for bringing math and science to life. Our students were encouraged to explore careers that will change the world we live in the future.

Well into my seventh year as your superintendent, I continue to be amazed by our students. This week U.S. Border Patrol recognized four of our best students during the November Youth of the Month ceremony held at United South High School. These young men and women demonstrate their talent and potential in remarkable ways. I would like to congratulate Jury Ruby De Anda, Cigarroa High School; Samantha Rae Salazar, Nixon High School; Gisselle Razo, Garcia Early College High School; and Jokabeth Castaneda, Martin High School. Not only do they go to school every day, they devote hundreds of hours to worthy causes and extracurricular activities.

Today we are celebrating Substitute Teachers Day throughout the district. Martha Walker, Veronica Garza and Maria Flores are to be lauded for making sure we have quality substitutes in our classrooms when needed. Substitutes provide a connection in the education of our children by serving as a link to provide continued quality education to students in the temporary absence of regular classroom teachers.

Martin High School Cross Country runner Abril Escamilla dominated every course she ran on this season. She placed first at the TAMIU, Rio Grande, Kingsville, UISD, District and Regional Meets running her way to the state meet. Last weekend Abril competed at the State Cross Country Meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Abril competed against 150 of the state’s fastest and strongest runners and finished in 29th place. We are so proud of Abril and her coach, Oralia Aguilar. We look forward to seeing Abril compete at the collegiate level.

Tonight I will be driving to Eagle Pass to watch the area playoffs between the Nixon High School Mustangs and the CC Winn High School Mavericks. I’m so proud of this team and Coach Tommy Ramirez for their discipline and efforts. These athletes have left it all on the field every game this season. Go Mustangs and on to state!

We welcomed the newest member of the LISD Board of Trustees, Cindy Liendo, who will be representing District 2 which includes Dovalina, Macdonell, and Daiches Elementary Schools. Her father, Judge Hector Liendo, Justice of the Peace for Precinct One, administered the oath of office on Wednesday night. Also renewing their oaths were re-elected board members Jose A.ValdezRick Garza and Jose R. Perez. I look forward to working with our Team of 8 for the benefit of our students. I also wish to thank Jesus Martinez for the eight years that he served on our board.

I hope you enjoy your well-deserved Thanksgiving break. May the good things in life be yours in abundance. I am filled with gratitude when I think of all that you offer to our children. Thank you for all you do for LISD’s 24,000 students.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving.
