“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas Edison

Good afternoon LISD,

This was a great week for student achievement at Laredo ISD. I am so proud of our youngsters for working hard and excelling in their activities both inside the classroom and in our extra-curricular undertakings.

Cigarroa High School FFA students traveled to San Antonio to compete in the annual Stock Show and Rodeo. Winners of the calf scramble were Emily Saldivar, Kimberly Veliz, Ayleen Urbina, and Moises Diaz. Agriculture teacher/FFA advisor Ernesto Villarreal, Jr., reports that several students also fared well at the 54th Annual Laredo International Fair and Exposition. Daphne Ramos won for Reserve Breed Lamb Champion, while Miguel Mata earned Reserve Grand Champion Poultry

The College Board has recognized Martin High School student Carlos Daniel Cruz for scoring in the top 2.5 percent on the PSAT/NMSQT among all Hispanic and Latino test-takers in our Region. As a result Carlos has been invited to participate in the National Hispanic Recognition Program. I would like to congratulate Carlos for being recognized by the College Board and for his superior scores.

After an intense competition of going word for word for 19 rounds, Leyendecker Elementary School’s Karla Madrigal was the last person standing as she was named the winner of the LISD Spelling Bee Contest. Madrigal, along with LISD top spellers from each elementary and middle school have been preparing for the upcoming countywide Spelling Bee Contest. Our second place winner was Camila Magallanes of Tarver Elementary School, while Jesus S. Moncada Jr. of J.C. Martin Elementary School was the third place winner. LISD’s spellers compete Saturday, March 25, in the countywide Spelling Bee sponsored by The Laredo Morning Times and the Literacy Volunteers of Laredo at TAMIU. Best of luck to our top spellers.

The J.W. Nixon High School Golden Spurs are celebrating their most recent successes. The talented dancers competed last weekend at the American Dance/Drill Team Regional Competition in San Antonio.  The Spurs represented LISD with class by winning the Sweepstakes Award, the Gussie Nell Davis Award of Excellence, Judges Awards in Team Kick, Team Jazz, Team Pom, Team Military, and Team Novelty. They also won the Platinum Award for receiving Best Overall in all four categories (Technique, Presentation, Precision and Choreography). The Spurs won Best in Class 1st Runner-up in Medium Teams out of eight teams and Best of the Best placing sixth out of 38 teams competing. Briana Martinez, Jocelyn Alvarez, Albert Garza, and Briana Castillo also won individual awards for their duet and solo routine.

On Thursday, Martin and Nixon High Schools hosted an 8th Grade Transitional Fair for students from Christen, Memorial, and Lamar Middle Schools. The middle school students heard various presentations from different campus organizations. After the presentations were complete student had the opportunity to visit with teachers and students from the different clubs, organizations, CTE programs, and magnet schools that will be available to them as ninth graders. This event was an excellent opportunity for our middle school students to start thinking about their future career paths. I want to thank our Guidance and Counseling Department at both high schools for putting this outstanding event together for our students.

This morning Nixon High School inducted alumni into their Mustang Legends during a ceremony held at the Richard Barton Gym. The induction ceremony recognized 13 individuals for their outstanding achievements and contributions as distinguished graduates of Nixon High School.  The recipients were presented with a plaque by school Principal Dr. Gerardo Cruz and were also treated to a brunch in the library.  This year’s inductees include Javier Ramirez ’70, Martin Cuellar ’76, Connie Vela ’76, Nelda Trevino ’78, Adriana Arce Flores ’80, Archie Ramos ’81, Albert Pena ’82, Cristobal Rodriguez ’83, Valdi Guzman ’86, Cordy Perez ’88, Vanessa Ortegon ’89, Jeannette Garza Vazquez ’91, and Judge Tano Tijerina ’92.

Cigarroa High School soccer players Jose Luis Garcia and Juan David Cruz have been recruited to play soccer this fall for Western Texas College. A ceremony was held at Cigarroa High School where Head Coach Jovany Macias of Western Texas College presented both athletes with a letter of Intent. CHS staff and family members were present to witness the signing. Congratulations to these students and their families, I look forward to seeing these students proudly representing LISD and Laredo on the field at WTC

If your schedule is open tonight, please be sure to drop by VMT for their first annual “Jazz in the Heights” Festival from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Due to inclement weather the festival has been moved indoors. Nationally renowned jazz musician and retired high school principal and Black Music Educator, Dr. Maurice Portis will headline the festival. Other great jazz musicians from different parts of Texas will also be performing with Dr. Portis. VMT will introduce for the first time, an area-wide Jazz Band comprised of jazz musicians from LISD, UISD, TAMIU, and VMT Alumni. I would like to thank Dr. Portis for traveling to Laredo from Corpus Christi to train our students. I am so happy to see so many alumni participate.

Everyone at LISD is ready for their well-deserved Spring Break. I hope you have a relaxing and safe vacation with your loved ones. See you back at LISD on Monday, March 20. In the meantime, don’t forget to reset your clocks this weekend. Move your clocks one hour forward as Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday.

Enjoy your Spring Break!
