“Educators are the only people who lose sleep over other people’s children.” Nicholas Ferroni

Buenas tardes LISD,

Along with El Cinco de Mayo, we have so much to applaud at LISD. The latest preliminary scores from the TEA show that LISD fifth and eighth grade students are making great gains in their reading and math scores. We still have much work to do but I am highly encouraged by these reports. I want to thank our teachers and students for pouring their hearts into their work. The STAAR exams continue next week and I want to wish you well as your students challenge this important test.

It’s the power of educators that we celebrate during Teacher Appreciation Week. This morning our Central Office administrators delivered cakes to each campus. Teachers took a break to enjoy their treats and praise. Over at Ryan Elementary School, the PTO hosted a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” luncheon. PTO President Goyo Lopez thanked the teachers and shared the microphone with LISD Board Members Hector “Tito” Garcia and Rick Garza.

Three of LISD’s finest teachers were recognized with the Laredo Chamber of Commerce School Bell Award during a ceremony hosted by Texas A&M International University. Family Chevrolet sponsored the awards and presented the winners with a check. Honorees included Rosa Flores of Dovalina Elementary, Jessica Talamantes of Lamar Middle School, and Robert M. Lopez of the Vidal M. Trevino School of Communications and Fine Arts.  Congratulations to these three educators and we salute you for inspiring young minds and creating a culture of life-long learning.

I’m also very proud of the LISD Finance Department, under the direction of Flor Ayala, for earning the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the district’s budget presentation for the fiscal year beginning September 1, 2016. This achievement represents LISD’s commitment to be good stewards of the resources that have been entrusted to us by our taxpayers. These guidelines are designed to assess how well the district’s budget presentation serves as a policy document, financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device.

Dr. Sylvia Rios, Bobbi Ramirez, and Mike Munoa joined the winners circle this week when they won the First Place trophy at the Literacy Volunteers of Laredo Adult Spelling Bee. The trio mastered truly difficult words such as subcutaneous, roturier, splacknuck, and calchecum to win the Spelling Bee. Funds raised at the Bee benefit the LVL’s tutoring program for adults who wish to learn to read and write.

On Wednesday evening the top runners from our elementary campuses participated in the annual Conrado Cruz Jr., City-Wide Super Track Meet sponsored by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Laredo, which was held at Shirley Field. The athletes participated in various individual and team events including sprints and relays with trophies being awarded to the top three runners. Congratulations to Santo Nino Elementary School for capturing second place in overall team standings and to all our athletes who participated in this activity. I would like to thank the Boys and Girls Clubs of Laredo Executive Director and LISD Board Member Hector Noyola and his volunteers for another well-organized Track Meet.

Happy Cinco de Mayo,

Dr. Marcus Nelson
