“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”-Winnie the Pooh

Buenas tardes LISD,

The final week of the 2017-2018 school year ended with memorable dedication ceremonies and commencement exercises. It was a happy ending to my time at Laredo ISD with eight unforgettable, transforming years.

On Tuesday, the LISD Board of Trustees dedicated the Martin High School Library in memory of the late Adelfa “Fita” Flores, who served as Martin High School Librarian for 10 years. Flores is credited for establishing the Library as a true resource center for the students and facility.

The Alma Pierce Elementary School Library was standing room only Wednesday morning. The LISD Josephine Torres. The highly-esteemed educator served LISD for 35 years and led Alma Pierce as principal for 22 years.

I was very inspired by the remarkable students who graduated with the LISD Class of 2017. These outstanding young men and women were truly committed to their instruction. For example, Cigarroa High School students Francisco Javier Trevino, Juan Manuel Mendoza, and Edwin Delgado had perfect attendance from Kinder through 12th grade as did Daniela De La Rosa of the Garcia Early College High School. Nixon High School student graduate Raquel Reyes volunteered 8,932 service hours, while Martin High School student Angel Fuentes, who is an All State Violinist, collected a whopping 9,500 community service hours.

I was delighted to see Nixon freshman Jose A. Martinez win a brand new 2017 Ford Fiesta in the Drive Sames 4 Education program sponsored by Sames Motor Company with tax, title, and license provided by the Laredo Federal Credit Union. The giveaway helps our school district promote perfect attendance among our students. Sames and the LFCU continue to be ardent supporters of our educational goals and I am grateful for their partnership.

And now I have come to the closing paragraph of my last Nelson’s Notes at Laredo ISD. I have thought about how to say farewell to my faithful readers. I wish I could say goodbye to each of you as an email seems a little impersonal. I would much rather offer you a warm abrazo as is customary in Laredo. But let me simply say this: Thank you for all that you do for the school district and for me personally. Our school district would not be where it is today without the dedication and personal sacrifice made by every employee. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your superintendent. God bless you and God bless LISD.

I will never forget Laredo ISD.
