J.W. Nixon High School and the LISD Athletic Department announced the selection of the new coach for Tennis at Nixon High School. Linda Leal, who was a former tennis standout at Nixon High School, returns to her Alma Mater as the new tennis coach.
“Tennis has been a significant part of my life for over 20 years,” said Leal. “I am thankful for the opportunity to return to my Alma Mater to coach and mentor students in their love for tennis, as it is a lifelong sport.”
Leal’s passion for tennis began when she started playing under the direction of Coach Laura Pichot and Assistant Coach Romeo Palacios during her freshman year at Nixon High School. As a student-athlete, she also volunteered her time in tournaments run by the Laredo Tennis Association (LTA) learning the ropes from Coach Pichot and the late Dr. Alfredo Trevino.
“Coach Leal returns to her alma mater and is ready to lead the way for the Nixon Mustangs. Coach Leal believes in hard work and I strongly believe her positive attitude will continue student success,” said Luis Escamilla, LISD Athletic Director. “On behalf of Laredo ISD, we wish Coach Leal and the Nixon tennis program much continued success.”
Coach Leal has been an elementary school classroom teacher throughout her educational career. During that time, she has sponsored the after-school Choir Club. She has been member of the L.I.S.D family for two years working as a classroom teacher at Ligarde Elementary School.
Leal is a product of LISD and a proud graduate of Nixon High School. She attended TAMIU and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Fitness & Sports with a minor in Criminal Justice. Leal later obtained a Master of Science degree in Curriculum & Instruction with a concentration in Bilingual Education from TAMIU.
