The LISD Board of Trustees approved the promotion of Fares Shrek to Assistant Athletic Director during a recent board meeting. Shrek, who previously served as Defensive Coordinator at Nixon High School, joins the Athletic Department team as the district’s new Assistant Athletic Director.

“I am honored and excited to step into the role of Assistant Athletic Director for Laredo ISD. I couldn’t be more thrilled to take on this new challenge,” said Shrek. “This position gives me the opportunity to continue fostering a culture of excellence within our athletic programs while supporting our students’ growth on and off the field. I am proud to continue serving our students, staff, and community in this new capacity.”

Shrek started his career in 2010 at Memorial Middle School as a Special Education Teacher and Head Basketball Coach, while also serving as an Assistant Coach for football and track. In 2016, he transitioned to Nixon High School, where he taught health and took on the roles of Defensive Coordinator, Assistant Basketball Coach, and Associate Head Football Coach.

“As Assistant Athletic Director, I hope to bring innovative ideas and a collaborative spirit to the Athletic Department.” I’m excited to begin this new chapter and look forward to working with our athletes, coaches, and staff to build on the strong foundation of excellence at Laredo ISD.” said Shrek. “My focus is on creating an environment where students and coaches feel empowered to excel. I believe in the power of teamwork, discipline, and hard work, and I’m committed to ensuring that our athletes have the resources and support they need to succeed.”

Their encouragement has been a constant source of strength for me,” said Shrek. “I am also deeply grateful to the Laredo ISD Board of Trustees, Superintendent Dr. Sylvia Rios, and Athletic Director Luis Escamilla for entrusting me with this incredible opportunity. Their confidence in my abilities motivates me to give my best every single day.”

Shrek grow up in Laredo, attending Nye Elementary, Trautmann Middle School, and graduating from United High School in 2002. He is a proud graduate of Texas A&M International University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fitness and Sports and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration in 2010, and a Master of Science in Educational administration in 2024.  

Coach Shrek will be overseeing soccer, baseball, softball, powerlifting, and golf and helping these programs reach new levels of success.
