Cheers and celebration filled the halls of Ligarde Elementary School recently as students and staff honored Keyarra Verdiguel, a true warrior who has bravely conquered cancer. The school community came together in a special parade to celebrate Keyarra’s victory after she successfully completed her treatments for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a diagnosis she received in September 2022.

After undergoing treatment at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Keyarra reached a major milestone in January 2025—ringing the bell to signify the end of her cancer treatments. In recognition of her strength and perseverance, Keyarra was crowned Survivor Warrior, receiving a tiara and a sash as she walked through the halls lined with students and staff cheering her on.

“I didn’t know anything about it, but I really liked it because my friends have been taking care of me,” said Keyarra Verdiguel. “It was emotional, but I pushed myself hard so I could get through it. I was strong because my parents were here for me, and I had to be strong for them—especially for my mom because she cried, and I had to cheer her up. It feels great having my friends here because if I didn’t have them, I would be alone. But I have my friends and my parents. I was suspicious about the parade, and they told me to close my eyes—it was such a surprise!”

During her treatments, Ligarde Elementary students rallied behind Keyarra by sending her heartfelt letters of encouragement and birthday cards. The school’s counselor also provided support to both Keyarra and her classmates to help them navigate the emotional impact of her journey.

“We are proud of Keyarra. She is a fighter, warrior, and survivor. It’s a huge milestone and moment of triumph,” said Erika Ramirez, Ligarde Elementary School Principal. “We wish her continued strength and good health as she embraces a new chapter in her life.”

In addition, Ligarde Elementary partnered with Smiles from Heaven, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children battling cancer, to host fundraisers benefitting the Verdiguel family. Their combined efforts provided emotional and financial relief, ensuring Keyarra and her family felt the support of their community every step of the way.

“To anyone going through this, I just want to say—you can be strong, just like me,” Keyarra added.
