Laredo Independent School District has joined school districts across the state to encourage good sportsmanship amongst student-athletes by participating in the “Texas Way” Campaign. Student-athletes from Martin, Nixon, and Cigarroa High Schools continue to elevate traditions on their campus by joining in the state-wide video campaign.
“It was a great opportunity to be part of such a big message,” said Nixon high school student-athlete Valeria Arroyo. “It was awesome to be in the video. I hope our message makes an impact and reaches all athletes especially the young athletes that are soon to be in high school.”
The Texas High School Coaches Association, in conjunction with the Texas High School Athletic Directors Associations and 2Words Character Development, have launched The Texas Way, a sportsmanship initiative designed to improve the level of sportsmanship at UIL sporting events, decrease ejections at UIL sporting events, improve relationships between coaches, players, officials and fans, and promote character building.
Sportsmanship has become enough of an issue statewide that University of Interscholastic League Director of Athletics Ray Zepeda reached out to the Texas High Schools Coaches Association to address it. The initiative centers around the three pillars of “The Texas Way” – respect for others, control of self, and spirit of competition.
LISD Athletic Director Luis Escamilla recently approached the district’s Instructional Television Department to create LISD’s own video promoting good sportsmanship by having LISD student-athletes take a pledge to commit to play the Texas Way.
“Here at Laredo ISD, we want our student-athletes to compete and be successful in life,” said Escamilla. “We want to continue elevating our traditions by having our student-athletes believe in the “Texas Way” by committing to good sportsmanship, respect, and our community.”
